Twig of Life

project:

Twig of Life is a site to display an interactive radial dendrogram of taxonomic relationships. The project constraints were to use unfamiliar technology and try to finish in a week. Initially we wanted to show all chordata but the 67,000+ species took 7 minutes to render. There are some screenshots below, they are pretty awesome. We decided that 7 minutes was too long and downloaded all the data and wrote a data munching algorithm to pull a well rounded sample of data. We explored ways to display variable counts of leaf nodes (100, 1000, 10000 etc).
